August: Rideau Trail meets Rideau Canal: a Slide Show
Here’s something a little different.
On my bookshelf is a small volume titled “Introducing Canals”, written
by Charles Hadfield and issued way back in 1955. It tells the story of the British canals and includes
some nostalgic hand sketches of canal scenes.
Although this book may recall times long past, it is possible to relive
those days right here in Eastern Ontario.
And right here in our own town of Perth is a good way to start, by
strolling down to the edge of the Tay Canal, from where you could embark on any
number of journeys up and down the Rideau Canal. For in many ways it has changed little in
over 180 years since the day it was built.
Last week I was enjoying a conversation with our friends from Parks
Canada, who are responsible for running and maintaining the Rideau Canal. We were chatting about how the Rideau Trail
and the Rideau Canal are partners in the same quest: to provide a link between Kingston and Ottawa. The Trail takes a much longer route of
course, but the two do meet now and then.
And in a spectacular finale, they join together at the foot of the staircase
of locks below Parliament Hill in the heart of Ottawa.
This conversation prompted me to put together a short slide show to describe,
in the briefest way, for those who may not know much about the Rideau Trail, some
of its highlights, and especially the places where it meets the Canal on its
long journey north.
This might be expanded in the future, but for now, enjoy the pictures,
