New Routes

Sat. 6 February:  From Eagles Nest to the Madawaska River

The Calabogie Peaks ski hills
It may be a mild winter, but the Calabogie ski hills are open.

Eagles Nest
This morning we drove past the foot of the ski hill.  The slopes were immaculately groomed, yet the place seemed uncrowded for a Saturday morning.  A few dozen skiers stood in different groups up the hillside – ski schools in progress no doubt – and there were no line-ups at the two lifts.

Our plan today was to check out the new winter route which we plan to hike later this month, from Eagles Nest down to the Madawaska River.  It passes through private land, but we had the proper permission to access it.
Manitou Lake and other side of the ski hills
This nine kilometre trail, through the wilderness area behind the ski hills, turned out to be an interesting trip.  Take the Eagles Nest lookout early in the hike, add a stroll across hidden Manitou Lake, below the mountain, and finish off with a visit to the edge of the magnificent Madawaska River – not yet frozen over – and you have a great hike.

Madawaska River
Put it in your diaries:  Saturday 27 February – and come enjoy a new experience.
